Mars Shinshu might not be the largest whisky distillery in Japan, but it more than makes up for its size with its elegance and grace. The Komagatake 10 Year Old is a pure malt, with no added grain whisky. Distilled at the highest operational distillery in Japan, and blended from carefully selected malts. This whisky is a blend of different vintages of different ages. This release was named after the area and the official flower of Nagano – the nature of Shinshu Rindo.
Nose: The aromas have alight fruit notes with malt and spice.
Palate: Smooth and soft with good sweetness and winter spice.
Finish: Finish is long, spicy and smooth.
Kagoshima Distillery was located just near the Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima City, which is on the island of Kyushu
The Rindo, Nature of Shinshu is believed to have been vatted from single malt distilled in 2012, some of which were aged in Japanese wine casks. It is also understood to contain some 20 Year Old stock. Limited to 8,200 bottles worldwide it has been bottled at 52% ABV.
One of our favorite Japanese Whiskies to drink with a hand-carved ice sphere comes from Mars Distillery. Located 800 meters above sea level in Miyata Village on Kyushu Island, Mars is the highest single malt distillery in the world. Produced from water that has passed through granite rock and that is high in natural minerals, the Mars ‘Rindo’ No Age Statement Single Malt has a full and balanced flavor.
Nose: Sherry, grapefruit, wood stain, an earthy note, dried mixed citrus peel, dried pears, tobacco.
Palate: Well the tobacco is still present but you wouldn’t think you were tasting the same whisky you have been nosing. Candy coated nuts, earthy peat, marzipan, white peaches, cashews, a mix of sweet and savory spices, tinned plums, menthol. Really quite moreish, I kept pouring more drams while writing up these notes.
Finish: Tobacco, earthy peat, cashews and menthol.
A well sorted blend of old and new stock and different cask types. Doesn’t really give any clues to the distiller as it is not like any previous offering from Mars Whisky I have tasted before.
